The Carroll Gardens Townhouse Renovation in Brooklyn is a spatial reflection of the Owners’ outdoor lifestyle and urban aesthetic. The primary design feature anchoring the house is the glass staircase, constructed perpendicular to the sidewalls of the house. This configuration is a major departure from the traditional layout of the Brooklyn Brownstone/ Townhouse, in which the stair connecting floors always runs along one sidewall from the first to the third floor. Further, the space of the main ‘parlor’ floor is visually connected through the introduction of a soaring 22’-0” space looking out to the rear garden, which provided an opportunity for the installation of a climbing wall. The second floor sitting area looks out over to the climbing wall and living room/ kitchen below.
A variety of unexpected materials were utilized throughout, including a carpet on the wall of the powder room reminiscent of a sea anemone, clear glass landings on the stairs, and Pilkington channel glass at the entry foyer. The finished product is one of a stylish family home, unified both in terms of aesthetics and shared spaces.
